Boys & Girls Clubs of America has been serving our nation's youth since 1860, when the first Boys & Girls Club was established in Hartford, Connecticut. Since then, the organization has grown to serve more than 4 million youth annually in some 4,300 Boys & Girls Clubs around the world. In Cincinnati, the Boys & Girls Clubs have been working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances for over 80 years. A gift from the Pfau Foundation will support the Graduate program.
Crayons to Computers provides approximately $1,250,000 worth of free school supplies and educational resources monthly to an average of 100 teacher "shoppers" each day. A teacher shopper takes an average of $700 worth of free educational supplies and resources for their classrooms during each shopping trip. As a result, greater Cincinnati school-age children are equipped with the basic tools they need to engage in their schoolwork and homework. A gift from the Pfau Foundation will support the Crayons for Kids Fund.
On October 9, 1978, a small group of parents and physicians met to discuss a pressing need "“ a nearby, low-cost "home away from home" for parents and other family members of seriously ill children being treated at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Camp Koinonia is a week-long residential camp program for youth with multiple disabilities. The camp program is part of a service learning course at the University of Tennessee where the students receive 12 weeks of course instruction on working with individuals with disabilities and then become the staff of the camp for the final culminating project. Camp Koinonia offers a once 1:1 camper to counselor ratio and in some cases a 2:1 depending on a camper's needs. The camp offers therapeutic activities in sport and games, music and movement, cooking, horses, ropes course, canoes, sensory, and pre-vocational training activities. A gift from the Pfau Foundation will support Camp Koinonia Scholarship Program.
La Soupe helps more than 100 local civic and social-service agencies serve their clientele with dignity, providing meals that are well-balanced, healthy, and delicious. After 192 years of service, the team at St. Joseph Orphanage (SJO) is in the process of reinventing themselves. Their core mission will not change – partner with hospitals, schools, local county mental health boards and county children service agencies to provide critically needed mental health services to some of the most vulnerable members of our community including children, youth, and their families. The goal is a reimagined and contemporary ownership structure, business model and name – NewPath Child and Family Solutions. Ken Anderson Alliance was launched in 2014 to address the lack of quality living and social support services available to young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Wesley Chapel Mission Center (WCMC) has been a consistent and reliable provider of after-school services in Over-the-Rhine since 2003. Its programs, serving children from early childhood through high school, are housed in six storefronts along East McMicken Avenue. This neighborhood between two elementary schools and across from a playground is one of the poorest and most violent-crime-ridden areas of the city. The center is known in the neighborhood as a safe and positive place to send school-age children after school. Programs are provided year-round, including Saturdays, at no cost to families. A gift from the Pfau Foundation will support KLASS: Keep Learning After School Stops.
iSpace delivers high quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) educational opportunities to children, educators and parents in Greater Cincinnati. 4C is the region’s primary resource for information on early care and education programs and the largest local provider of training and technical assistance for early childhood teachers. Since 1984, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Greater Cincinnati (BHGH) has been caring for and supporting children with strong academic potential from extremely challenging home environments, due to poverty, abuse and/or neglect, divorce, inadequate housing and schooling or substance abuse. BHGH serves an average of 30 7th grade through college-level scholars each year. The model’s success derives from the deep investment of intensive wraparound support provided to a relatively small number of at-risk, high-potential youth. MindPeace was founded in 2002 by the Junior League of Cincinnati as a result of access and coordination challenges within the system of mental health care for children in Cincinnati. Focus on Youth, Inc. (FOY) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to improve the lives of children by providing strengths-based foster care, adoption, and mental health services that promote the permanency, safety, and well-being of youth. WAVE Foundation is the nonprofit, education arm of the Newport Aquarium, an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Launched in 1999, the Aquarium is owned by a privately held company whose mission is to create family experiences. WAVE Foundation was created alongside the Aquarium with the mission to engage and educate the community with a goal to create stewards and advocates of the natural world. For 46 years, LADD has provided residential programs supporting independent living for adults with developmental disabilities. The consistent and reliable quality of LADD’s services is reflected in the organization successfully renewing its CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities) accreditation over the past 15 years. Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship (CTRH) has served children and adults with disabilities since 1985 by providing equine-assisted activities and therapies. These services include adaptive recreational riding for people with disabilities, hippotherapy for individuals with specific medical needs and disabilities, equine-facilitated learning for youth with mental health issues, and therapeutic visits with trained miniature horses. A gift from the Pfau Foundation will support 2021 Hope through Hippotherapy.
In 2015, Capital District Community Gardens moved to new headquarters and changed their name to Capital Roots to represent the full breadth of their work assisting underserved, low-income, minority and senior populations in the Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady Counties (the Capital District) in upstate New York. The mission of the organization is to improve neighborhoods and the lives of the residents that live within them by improving their health and well-being through increased access to healthy, fresh vegetables as well as self-sufficiency among residents by helping them to sell the food that they grow. Beech Acres Parenting Center was founded in 1849 in response to the cholera epidemic that took the lives of over 4,000 citizens in Cincinnati. For 125 years, they have served as an orphanage, providing a haven for children who had been displaced by parental death, poverty, or other family disruptions. Dohn Community High School of Cincinnati (DCHS), a state-funded charter school with a focus on dropout recovery, has been serving at-risk, inner city youth since 2001.
